Petition Statement

Preserve Quality Education Delivered at Madison Elementary
The Cedar Rapids School District has listed Madison Elementary as a potential school to close in 2012 based on recent enrollment and facility assessments. Recommended closings could occur as soon as the 2012-2013 school year. There are many reasons to support maintaining Madison Elementary as a fully functioning K-5 school in the Cedar Rapids School District in the 2012-2013 calendar years and beyond including:

STUDENT PERFORMANCE

25% increase in ITBS Reading Comprehension Scores with 79% Proficiency (2010-2011 scores compared to 2009-2010)

31% increase in ITBS Math Scores with 83.7% Proficiency (2010-2011 scores compared to 2009-2010)

Madison led District attendance in 2011 for the Summer Reading Program with 482 students and 1,119 books checked out!

MADE THE CHOICE TO ATTEND MADISON ELEMENTARY:

20% of current Madison Elementary students are permitted (non-Madison school district students who choose to attend Madison Elementary) in 2011-2012.

30% of parents permitted their student(s) to attend Madison from Harrison Elementary in 2011-2012 percentage of parents who attended the 12/13/11 parent meeting.

1% open enrolled their student from outside the Cedar Rapids School District to attend Madison Elementary.

POSITIVE PARENT FEEDBACK:

Near 100% (A+) scores on the 2010-2011 Madison Parent Survey including:

99% feel welcome at Madison. Madisons teachers and staff are active during school and at school functions.

97% feel their child is safe while at Madison

FACILITY & COMMUNITY:

100% handicap accessible inside and out fully accommodating the needs of students, community members (voters), teachers, and staff.

Capacity to expand if additional space is required.

Located outside the 500 year flood zone in a safe residential neighborhood.

Extended Facility Utilization Madison is used by community groups including: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Waypoint Before & After School Programs, Summer Camp, and more.

GET INVOLVED - there are many ways to help!
1. Sign the Petition.
2. Contact the Cedar Rapids Schools Superintendent and School Board Members via e-mail and/or phone to voice support. Consider using your cell phone to shoot a short 30 second video of you and/or your child expressing support and then e-mail it to the Superintendent and Board Members.
3. Have your students and Madison alumni write letters of support. Have them include their picture too! Drop off in the Madison PTA mailbox by 12/19.
4. Friend Madison Elementary PTA on Facebook to keep informed about latest developments and how you can help.
5. Attend the January 9th 5pm School Board meeting held at the Grant Wood AEA office on 6th Street. The Superintendent will make his recommendation at this meeting. You can voice your opinion to arrive a little early to sign-up if youd like to speak to the board. Even if you dont want to speak you can support Madison by attending.
