Laurier's On-Campus Food Choices 387 signatures

We are petitioning for better food on campus at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University. Currently, there is hardly any selection on campus. The choices are Mr. Sub, Pizza Pizza, Harvey's, Pita Shack, Spring Rolls, Union Market, Williams, Starbucks, Dining Hall and Tim Hortons. Some of the places that are available do not even meet health regulations (Union Market and Spring Rolls). Other universities not only have a way larger selection but they have much lower prices. We need to send a message to the University that the variety is too small and not meeting health regulations is unacceptable. Hopefully we can make a change because I don't know about everyone else but I'm sick of eating shit food. SIGN THE PETITION AND SUPPORT THE CAUSE!!

Rescind $75 fee 262 signatures

The students of South Brunswick High School signed up for AP classes in January 2011 without any knowledge that in April 2011, the school board would decide to force students to pay a mandatory $75 fee per AP class in addition to the $90 fee per AP test. The students did not receive any official letter or notice that they would have to pay such fees until September 2011, a full nine months after students had registered for classes. The students received a deadline to hand in these payments on January 6, two weeks before the money is due. If the students refuse to pay the money out of protest for the many obvious reasons, including never agreeing or knowing of the fees before they registered for clases or just paying extra money for a public school education, they will suffer a series of consequences. The most serious of which is related to the seniors, who will not have their mid-year reports sent out to colleges. If colleges do not receive our mid-year reports, they will not grant us admission. This will cause irrevocable damage to our futures, punishments for not doing anything wrong. This sudden charging of fees is at best misguided and the punishments associated with it are egregious. The purpose of school should be to foster a learning environment rather than squeezing students and their families for money. We are signing this petition to signify our protest against "Pay to Learn".

Full Day Kindergarten at Surrey Hills Elementary for the 2012-2013 School Year 46 signatures

We, the parents and concerned citizens of Yukon, OK, petition the Yukon School District to provide full-day kindergarten to ALL children attending the Yukon Public School District beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. Currently all but two elementary schools within the district have implemented full-day kindergarten. Surrey Hills Elementary is scheduled to begin full-day kindergarten beginning 2013-2014 and will be the last school site in the district to be provided this opportunity. Children enrolled in full-day kindergarten are provided music, physical education and art. These opportunities are not available to half-day kindergarteners. All children attending the Yukon Public School District should have an opportunity for equal education.

There are many reasons to support maintaining Madison Elementary as a fully functioning K-5 school in the Cedar Rapids School District in the 2012-2013 calendar years and beyond including: STUDENT PERFORMANCE 25% increase in ITBS Reading Comprehension Scores with 79% Proficiency (2010-2011 scores compared to 2009-2010) 31% increase in ITBS Math Scores with 83.7% Proficiency (2010-2011 scores compared to 2009-2010) Madison led District attendance in 2011 for the Summer Reading Program with 482 students and 1,119 books checked out! Save CCNY's Math! 37 signatures

Dear President Coico, As I am sure you are aware, the lower level math curriculum and systems at our City College is in large part broken, failing to educate good students. This is a terrible problem with consequences that are affecting lives. From the terribly under-resourced Gateway Program to the not much better Math 19000 and 19500 Algebra courses, students are finding themselves cornered, unable to pass these classes even with great effort. They are forced to retake and repay for these courses over and over and over. Besides the emotions and low self-esteem that a student suffers from during their stint in one of these math courses (or in several of these math courses), there is the wasted energy and time for both the student and college alike. This goes to say that its not far-fetched to assume that our unsatisfactory graduation rate of below 40% is proportionally due to the failing math system. Many students will stay in college another year or two to get through this arduous system and with a lowered GPA and higher student loans the problem remains: students with unsatisfactory mathematical skills trying to build on an inadequate foundation. Still, others will inevitable drop out--essentially being denied a college education. We are smart and good students who deserve a proper mathematics education. So, I come today not just with harsh ridicule nor just to complain but with a modern day solution that I believe will save the student and college both time and money, and potentially establish CCNY as an authority of mathematics education. Therefore, I am proposing a simple but revolutionary idea by the founder of the Khan Academy, Salman Khan that goes like this: 1. Students watch a tutorial lecture online at night and do coordinated online homework. (I'd take this idea further by adding accountability whereby students must login on certain days showing they watched and did the homework.) 2. Students then go to class to solidify what they've learned. This is done in a group environment of peers where the information and homework is reviewed with the help of a professor. To quote, Mr. Khan from his March 2011 Ted Talk*, "By removing the one size fits all lecture from the classroom, students have a self-paced lecture at home . . . [instead of] a one size fits all lecture to 30 students." This simple program will open the floodgates of benefits and tools: Student will be able to pause and repeat, watching and learning at his or her own pace, all pressure free. But what I think the most important benefit that this program embodies is expectation of mastery. The Khan Academy program with tutorials ranging from addition to calculus also comes with a program that generates as many problems as necessary until the student gets the concept. Salman Khan describes the situation like this, "The traditional model, it penalizes you for experimentation and failure but it does not expect mastery, we encourage you to experiment, we encourage you to fail but we do expect mastery." And this is the problem, that good students (with good professors!) in our current system can pass a class with a D, which is not mastery; that is an inadequate foundation that will only cause problems in the future. Whether CCNY creates their own tutorials and problem generator, are but mere details. I think there is considerable opportunity here: We are among the Occupy Wall Street sentiments where we have arrived at the right time in history for change. Like the occupiers, students are being underserved by current systems and are rising to say that now is the time for new ideas, new technologies and new ways of coordinating the liberal arts education for our modern world and its people. This is not a problem; this is an opportunity for CCNY to set a precedent of mastery for all its students in mathematics education and not only for our college and not only for our university but a precedent set for education in our country and our world. I am a good student, and like many of my peers I am caught in the inadequate system that of CCNY's math curriculum and I need my college to take this opportunity to choose to be a leader in mathematics education. Dear Reader, Higher education is essential to maintaining a competitive society that is to thrive in a global economy, but unfortunately the cost of college in America has been skyrocketing out of control. In fact, as of late 2011, it is estimated that US citizens carry over $1,000,000,000,000 in student loan debt. That is a gigantic burden that will need to be repaid by our nation's youth, all while having to battle stagnant wage growth, high unemployment, and strong emerging global competitors. Sign this petition and ask that the United States government allow American citizens to repay student loans with income earned, pre-tax, up to $600 per month, per debtor. A pre-tax student loan repayment program will serve as a benefit to all parties involved in the student loan: -Creditors will see lower rates of default and deferment. -Debtors will have more disposable income in their pockets after their monthly loan payment, making the necessities of life more affordable, and the ability to invest meaningfully in our economy more achievable. Stop the ill treatment of students by Kaye Thomas 8 signatures

Mercer graduate students of the Atlanta campus have been ill-treated by Kaye Thomas since she began as the Director of the Office of Field Placement in 2010. We, the student body, pay Mercer University too much money in tuition each semester to (1) be talked down to when we inquire about our field placements or lack thereof, (2) have a conflict with orientation due to taking a GACE examination, (3) not be accommodated when given a field placement weeks or months late, and (4) not be able to file a grievance about the field placement process either through an online course evaluation or with a faculty member in a position to correct situations as they arise. We, the student body, now demand the following changes: (1) Students should be treated with respect in person, by phone, and via email. Students are customers and customer service skills should be utilized. (2) Orientations should NEVER be held on a GACE testing date. Students should be able to take state certification examinations without the pressure of attending an orientation on the same day. (3) Field experiences should NEVER start late. However, if a field placement is given to a student late, that student should be able to fulfill all requirements with a schedule that is mutually beneficial to the student, Cooperating Teacher, and University Supervisor not the Office of Field Placement. (4) Students should be able to complete a course evaluation for the Director and their University Supervisor as in all other courses. (5) Students should have an independent, unbiased faculty member to voice their grievances to about the field placement process. This individual should be in a position of power to correct situations as they arise. We demand that the 5 aforementioned changes be made to the field placement process prior to the Spring 2012 semester. Whenever students had tried to register their protest over any kind of irregularity or grievance, they had been issued notice and action was taken against them stating the reason as ‘violation of code of conduct set by University.’ Surprisingly, even though Constitution of India empowers the citizens to participate in political activities and authorizes person of above 18 age to vote , the University’s code of conduct reads “'Students should not involve themselves either directly or indirectly in any form of politics either inside or outside the University during their period of study.'' This is the naked violation of our basic rights. We, students are not even allowed to raise our voice against poor quality of food being supplied in the hostels. Those who raised voice were issued notice by the administration. Students are suffering very much under autocratic administration of university. We, the students of Pondicherry University, are taught to the CULTURE OF SILENCE and we are CONVINIENTLY SUBSCRIBED TO THIS AUTOCRATIC CULTURE. We have been deprived of the fundamental democratic rights including TO ORGANISE DEMOCRATICALLY AND PEACEFULLY..!! Keep the Clocktower Community at Atholton ES 1 signatures

This petition is to urge the Howard County Board of Education to leave polygons 18 and 1018 at Atholton Elementary School. First and foremost, this will be a major disruption to the childhood development of over 100 young children. This removes our polygons from Atholton, but then puts over 70 students from Guilford ES into Atholton. How does that alleviate any overcrowding at Atholton ES? It is a major disruption to our children and neighborhood, for little, if any, benefit to the schools or the school system. Leaving our polygons at Atholton would also create a more equal balance in FARMs percentage and test scores between Atholton ES and neighboring Hammond ES. If our polygon does indeed need to be moved from Atholton ES, Guilford ES is not the best option. We then support a move to Hammond ES instead of Guilford ES. The statistics provided in the Supplement to the Feasibility Study from June 2011 show Hammond's projected capacity is 597 and their projected enrollment after the proposed redistricting is 472, giving them a 79.1% capacity. Guilford, on the other hand has a projected capacity of 462, projected enrollment after redistricting is 476, putting Guilford at 103% enrollment. If they simply put polygons 18 and 1018 into Hammond ES, Hammond would be at 584, still BELOW their capacity. Furthermore, according to page 20 of the Supplement, the existing FARM percentage for Atholton ES is 22%, that number would drop to 10% with the proposed redistricting. Guilford's existing percentage is 30%, however, their number will jump to 37% if polygons 18 and 1018 were moved there. At the same time, the MSA Math scores drop from 87% to 85% and the MSA Reading scores drop from 89% to 86%. This is a weakness in this plan. Guilford ES will be over-enrolled, with a higher FARM % and lower test scores. Meanwhile, two nearby elementary schools, Atholton ES and Hammond ES will be under capacity, with lower FARM % and higher test scores. This proposal is not in the best interest of the children currently enrolled at Guilford or the children being redistricted there. In conclusion, we are asking for polygons 18 and 1018 remain at Atholton Elementary School. It is the best option for our neighborhood, and, I believe for the all of the schools involved.

Our goal is to extend the time the students get to rest their bodies and most importantly... brains. It is a proven fact that students who receive less sleep in the morning experience problems concentrating and focusing on school work in the morning. It may not seem that big of a time difference, but as a student myself I do realize that other schools who start later on in the morning can not only concentrate more than students who wake up earlier, but also can learn more and understand more of the subject they are learning. If the school starts later, we think that the grades in the schools will raise and the students will learn more material.

All questions relating to 2012 doomsday (detected by keyword, I.e. dooms day, Nibiru, end of world, 2012 world end) would transfer to a category of Doomsday Theories or another appropriate category. 2. The aforementioned topic is banned from yahoo answers in full. Questions of this category are in a viral sense, annoying and coming in at a faster rate as the day approaches.
